NHBPM – I Still Remember…

(Image via echotrademarketing.com)

I still remember one Christmas Eve when I was probably 7 or 8. I, for some reason, was given a race car set. I have no idea why this was chosen for me. I played with the typical girl stuff that little girls played with when they where 7 or 8. But, someone thought it would be great if I got this.

What I do remember is that, like so many people around the holidays, I had a cold or flu. I was usually allowed to open a small present on Christmas Eve. (You know what’s coming, don’t you?) That year, my father and brother took pity on poor, sick me and implored my mother that I get to open a present. Not just any present, but this big present. She finally agreed and… it was the race car set. My father and brother were so kind that night. They set it up for me and I even had a few races.

And that was it for me that night. I had to stop because I was sick and needed my rest, of course.

Then my father and brother played with it and had a blast having races.

I still don’t know why that was given to me because I rarely played with it. Maybe the guys wanted something to play with that year, I don’t know. Hope they had fun.

  1. Yes, a race car set that looks like the one in the picture. And I’m sure I would have played with it much more if it did have Barbie cars. I can’t complain about presents, though. I always did good at Christmas.

  2. I would have loved it! I had girl toys and loved those…but I loved boy toys too!
I always wanted a race track set, or a train..but never got one…and I didn’t have a brother. I remember going to a good friend of mine’s house..she had bothers and sisters…we’d have the best time with the race tracks. Funny, haven’t thought of that in years.

She found me on Facebook recently. She has Lupus. What was in the water where we grew up?

I remember one year..when I was 16, I was in the hospital for a severe ear infection (hmmm, wonder if that has anything to do with now, this wasn’t the only trip of it’s kind) but any ways…They released me late on Christmas eve. My parents weren’t completely prepared. They thought I’d be in until after Christmas…They had presents, but the tree was half done…no Christmas dinner planned…but it was the best Christmas I remember.
I was home, and I got my first 35 mm SLR camera. That was the best camera ever! Saw me through college, and beyond. A Cannon, a great one, with a metal body…not these plastic things of today.
I gave that camera to a dear friend, it had a light leak…after something like 30 years, and she got it fixed. She was just starting photography in college so I gave it to her…and it still works….wow, what a wonderful camera…and an amazing memory. That was the best gift I think I ever got. and my Father picked it out…my father and I, well, we just haven’t ever gotten along.

    thanks for the memory kicker.
